The Zeehondencentrum, or seal rehabilitation centre, in Pieterburen (near Groningen) is a lovely place to visit with young kids.
The centre is fairly small, but they’ve packed a lot into the space. There are exhibits explaining about the life of seals and the dangers they face, several viewing areas and regular chances to take a ‘back stage tour’, see the seals being fed or just watch them basking in the pools outside. There’s also a small indoor play area for kids, and a theatre where films and other activities take place.
For young families, we’d recommend planning for a visit of 1-2 hours. Bring snacks if you’re coming with kids, as there’s no canteen – only a small vending machine selling hot drinks. On a nice day, you could bring a simple picnic lunch and eat it outside near the seal pools at the back of the centre.
Where to find it: The seal creche is in the small town of Pieterburen. It would be easiest to come by car or by bicycle from a nearby town.
