One of our favourite ways to spend a day together as a family is with a visit to Het Geertje.
It’s an organic farm and petting zoo located close to Leiden. It’s free to visit, open every single day of the year and our little boy loves it. There are various barns and stalls to explore, with cows, goats, pigs, horses and chickens inside. There’s also a small playground and even a campground if you want to spend the night!
The best time to go is in the spring because that’s when kids have the chance to bottle feed the lambs. They’re open year round though, so go anytime the mood strikes you!
Once you’re done looking around, stop into the farm shop where you can sample and buy some homemade goat’s cheese. There’s also a kid-friendly restaurant. The food isn’t exactly what you’d call exciting (think pancakes and okay-ish appeltaart) but it should be enough to sustain the youngest members of your group.
Where to find it: Geerweg 7, 2381LT, Zoeterwoude. Het Geertje isn’t easily reached by public transport. You’ll need your own car or bicycle. The bike ride from The Hague or Leiden is very pleasant. Use this bicycle route planner to map your route. You could even make it an overnight trip by going in the afternooon and staying at the small campground.
