The next time you find yourself between Apeldoorn and Deventer, take a detour towards Bakkerij Bril.
We stumbled on it by accident during a bike trip across the Dutch countryside this summer. We had no idea that it is one of the most famous bakeries in the Netherlands!
The bakery has been around for over 150 years. As you can see from the photo below (taken in the 1960s), it hasn’t changed much over the years.
They specialise in speculaas (for those who’ve never had the pleasure of tasting it, speculaas is a kind of gingerbread), current buns and appeltaart (Dutch apple cake). The appeltaart is really something special!
It’s surrounded by gingerbread. This may not be to everyone’s taste but it’s certainly unique! It’s fairly affordable too, just €3.75 for a piece of appeltaart and a coffee.
Where to find it: Rijksstraatweg 24, 7383AR, Voorst.
